Primary Stroke Center

Stroke

The Evergreen Stroke Program is certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission, which means we meet the highest national standards for stroke care.

The Program has also received the American Stroke Association’s Bronze Performance Achievement Award, which recognizes our commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care.

When a stroke patient arrives at the Emergency Department, Evergreen's stroke team leaps into action. Diagnostic imaging prepares for immediate CT scans, with a radiologist on hand to read the results. The lab prepares to rush blood tests. Additional nursing resources gather, along with the emergency physician, a neurologist and a hospitalist. Depending on the type of stroke, treatment is begun with either clot-busting tPA or brain surgery.

Following treatment, stroke patients are admitted to Evergreen Hospital under the care of the critical care specialists and the hospitalist team. While in the hospital, physical, occupational and speech therapists work with patients to improve their abilities.

Stroke patients needing additional therapy before being discharged will transition into the Acute Rehabilitation Unit. Continued outpatient therapy is available at Evergreen’s Stroke and Brain Injury program.
